A hospital that was on the verge of closure in 2021 is now one of the leading medical institutions in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Thanks to a hybrid solar power station installed by the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation, the facility has become more energy independent and can continue operating even during blackouts.
The Kryvyi Rih Central District Hospital is a modern multidisciplinary medical center that provides rehabilitation after injuries, limb prosthetics, and surgical procedures, including same-day surgeries. In 2024, the hospital performed over 1,800 operations (compared to just 30 in 2021) and provided medical care to more than 74 000 patients, including 14 000 in inpatient care.
Despite the full-scale war, the hospital has opened new departments – surgical, outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation – and modernized its neurology unit. It provides care to both adults and children.
“Today, patients are brought to us from all over the district. We perform surgeries for various injuries, as well as urological and neurological conditions. 85% of our doctors are young, talented professionals from all over Ukraine, whom we attracted with good working conditions, modern equipment, and opportunities for professional growth,” says Valerii Yaremenko, the hospital’s director. “Just four years ago, we didn’t even have a surgical department – in fact, the hospital was at risk of closure. Everything we have today is the result of tremendous efforts by our medical team, the community, and the active support of charitable and civic organizations.”
In the fall of 2025, the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation installed a 30 kW hybrid solar power station on the hospital’s premises. It includes an energy storage system with a capacity of 62.1 kWh, enabling the hospital to operate autonomously for up to 4 hours during power outages. The system is expected to help the hospital save around €6,658 per year on electricity costs.
“When the nationwide blackout hit Ukraine in 2023 and everything seemed to stand still, the hospital kept operating – but the conditions were extremely difficult. That’s why the solar power station installed by the foundation on our roof is a proactive step,” adds Yaremenko. “It will allow our surgeons to perform operations with fully functioning equipment in well-lit operating rooms. We will also use the savings to train our doctors so they can save even more lives – right here, in Ukraine.”
The project was implemented by the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation with the support of Huawei Ukraine and the coordination assistance of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on Energy and Housing and Communal Services.
“When doctors can keep working even during blackouts, it means that technology truly serves people. That’s exactly why we are installing solar power stations in hospitals across Ukraine – so that patients can receive timely care, and medical workers can feel confident in their work even in the most challenging conditions,” emphasized Yuliana Onіshchuk, Founder and CEO of the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation.
“We believe that a hospital is a place where electricity must always be available. Providing our equipment to medical institutions is not just sponsorship — it’s an investment in the resilience of Ukraine’s healthcare system, in caring for people, and in patient safety,” noted Tony Cao, Director of Huawei Ukraine.
This is already the tenth solar power station built by the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation as part of the “50 Solar Hospitals” project. The foundation is also implementing the “100 Solar Schools” and “Solar Water Utilities” initiatives, where each installed station helps save the lives of thousands of Ukrainians.
