Velyka Dymerka Community Selected for the AI-Powered Microgrids for Ukraine Pilot

Velyka Dymerka community in the Kyiv region has been selected for the pilot implementation of the international AI-Powered Microgrids for Ukraine project. The selection followed a nationwide call led by Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation, which received more than 500 applications from communities across Ukraine.
The project is supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) under the Innovate Ukraine programme and brings together Ukrainian and international partners to develop innovative solutions that strengthen the energy resilience of Ukrainian communities.
A modern solar microgrid with an energy storage system is planned for Velyka Dymerka community. Artificial intelligence will be used to help manage the system and optimise its performance.
Selecting the community was one of Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation’s key responsibilities within the initiative. At the beginning of 2026, the Foundation invited local authorities from across Ukraine to apply for the pilot. After receiving more than 500 applications, potential locations were assessed together with consortium partners against technical and other relevant criteria. Velyka Dymerka community was selected as a result of this process.
Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation’s role goes beyond the selection process. An important part of our work will focus on people and knowledge: training local specialists, organising seminars and workshops on renewable energy technologies, providing consultations on energy strategy development, and engaging the local community.
This approach combines innovative technology with what is essential for its long-term impact — local knowledge, expertise and the capacity of communities to shape their own energy future.
AI-Powered Microgrids for Ukraine is implemented by an international consortium led by John Pontin Trust, Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation, Energixia International, IKNET, Open Climate Fix та Queen Mary University of London.
