In February 2026, the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation implemented its first solar power project at an obstetric and gynecological healthcare facility — the Cherkasy City Maternity Hospital “Mother and Child Center”.

This installation also became the first hybrid solar power station built by the foundation in the Cherkasy region, expanding the geography of the “50 Solar Hospitals” initiative to 11 regions of Ukraine.

This project is funded through the Ukraine Partnership Facility (UPF). UPF is a programme from the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO) commissioned by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The partnership is lead by Stichting de Boomgaard, in partnership with Solarge, Ukrainian-Netherlands Charitable Foundation LifeLine Ukraine.org, and the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation.

The Cherkasy City Maternity Hospital “Mother and Child Center” has been operating since 1964. The medical facility provides outpatient and inpatient care to pregnant women, women in labor, new mothers, and newborns, performs scheduled and emergency surgical procedures, and conducts a wide range of laboratory tests for early disease detection.

Each year, the maternity hospital serves over 113,000 patients. On average, around 100 babies are born here every month, and approximately 200 surgical procedures are performed.

The installed 20 kW solar power station, equipped with an energy storage system with a capacity of 50,1 kWh, will ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to critical hospital units, including:

  • delivery rooms and the obstetric operating block;

  • intensive care units for women and newborns;

  • the neonatal care department;

  • the clinical diagnostic laboratory;

  • emergency lighting along evacuation routes.

Thanks to the use of modern innovative technologies, the facility will be able to optimize utility costs and reduce its annual financial burden by up to €4,800.

In the event of power outages, the maternity hospital’s vital departments will be supplied with electricity from solar generation and battery storage for up to three hours, ensuring continuity of life-saving medical care.

Dmytro Vitrenko, director of the Cherkasy City Maternity Hospital “Mother and Child Center,” stated: “The Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation was the tenth organization we approached for support in strengthening the hospital’s energy resilience — and the only one that brought the project to completion. We are sincerely grateful to the charity and its partners for this support.”

Yuliana Onishchuk, CEO & Founder of the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation, emphasized: “This project is especially meaningful for us. It is the first hybrid solar power station built by the Foundation in the Cherkasy region — and implemented at a maternity hospital. We understand that stable electricity supply in such facilities is a matter of life safety for mothers and newborns — the most precious value for our country. That is why we are incredibly proud of the results and continue working to strengthen the energy resilience of other medical institutions across Ukraine.”
