A high school in Mykolaiv Oblast was supplied with solar power after several days of blackouts
Arbuzyn Lyceum No. 2 named after T.G. Shevchenko, which accommodates around 500 children, has launched its new academic year powered by solar energy. The Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation has installed a hybrid solar power station at the educational facility. The new system will cover up to 86% of the lyceum's annual electricity needs, ensuring uninterrupted learning during blackouts and saving the local community over €10,000 annually.
Last winter, severe Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure left Arbuzynka facing multi-day blackouts. The lack of electricity caused the school’s heating plant to shut down, forcing the lyceum to shift students to remote learning. This year, the facility enters the school term equipped with its own solar generation and energy storage system.
The installed hybrid solar power station features a capacity of 30 kW alongside a 31 kWh energy storage system. It is expected to generate approximately 48 MWh of electricity per year.

The local community has already witnessed the initial results of the installation. Over the summer, electricity consumption from the public grid dropped nearly threefold compared to the same period last year—falling from 7,212 to 2,066 kWh. This has already saved the local budget approximately 50,000 UAH.
"For our community, this project represents a tangible investment in energy resilience and budget savings. We are already seeing reduced electricity costs, and during outages, the solar station will alleviate the load on our generator, cutting fuel consumption. Most importantly, it will ensure stable operations for the lyceum and continuous learning even during blackouts. We thank the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation for this vital contribution to the development of the Arbuzynka community," stated Yevhenii Travianko, mayor of Arbuzin.
In addition to installing the solar station, the Foundation's team delivered a hands-on educational program for 100 students. The curriculum focused on renewable energy, ecology, and energy efficiency for schools and communities, utilizing practical STEM methods.
"Securing Ukraine's energy resilience requires a combination of green energy development and human capital. The project in Arbuzynka embodies exactly that. We installed the solar station at the lyceum and followed it up with our 'Energy Education for Children and Youth' program, where we explained and demonstrated how it works in practice. We aim not only to protect our youth from the hardships of war and blackouts but also to inspire them to build a safer world with sustainable habits," shared Yevheniia Pavliuk, COO of the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation.
The solar power station at the Arbuzyn Lyceum was made possible through financial support from the German foundation Schöpflin Stiftung. Octopus Energy is a partner of the Foundation, supporting projects to install renewable energy systems and energy storage systems in schools and hospitals across Ukraine.
This marks the third facility in the Mykolaiv region to be equipped with solar generation by the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation, following the previous installation of hybrid solar systems at two local medical institutions.
